Petőfi Sándor Program
The Petőfi Sándor Program was launched in 2015 by the State Secretariat for Hungarian Communities Abroad, based on the model of the already existed Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Program. The main aim of the Petőfi Sándor Program is to aid those Hungarians who live in the Carpathian Basin in scattered minority communities in the majority population (in Hungarian: szórvány). Thus the Petőfi Sándor Program extends to the territory of the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, affecting Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia and southern Poland. In these countries Hungarian organizations, churches, and educational institutions determine the areas where the interns taking part in the program are needed. Their activities are mainly directed to strengthen the Hungarian identity of the targeted groups, and thereby slow down the decline of the Hungarian population in the mentioned countries.
