Hungarian civil society organizations in Slovakia

After the regime change in 1989, the civil sector in Slovakia, including Hungarian civil society organizations, embarked on rapid development, with their numbers increasing steadily. The largest Hungarian civil society organization in Slovakia is the Hungarian Cultural and Educational Association in Slovakia (Csemadok), established in 1949. Csemadok operates through 17 regional branches and has nearly 400 local chapters in the country. Other prominent professional organizations of significance for Hungarian-language education are the Hungarian Teachers’ Association in Slovakia (Szlovákiai Magyar Pedagógusok Szövetsége) and the Hungarian Parents’ Association in Slovakia (Szlovákiai Magyar Szülők Szövetsége). Another noteworthy civil society organization is the Roundtable of Hungarians in Slovakia (Szlovákiai Magyarok Kerekasztala), which serves as an independent coordinating forum for Hungarian organizations in Slovakia and encompasses more than 120 civil society organizations. The Forum Minority Research Institute (Fórum Kisebbségkutató Intézet) focuses on conducting thorough research on the national minorities living in Slovakia, documenting their culture, written records, and other heritage. The Hungarian Scout Association in Slovakia is another civil organization of national significance, devoted to the education of young people. With over 1,400 members, it operates in 40 scout communities in the Hungarian-populated areas of Southern Slovakia. In 2001, the Association for Common Goals (Szövetség a Közös Célokért) was established as an umbrella organization, managing an office network with organizing and informational purposes in the regions of Southern Slovakia. Among nationally active organizations representing Hungarian youth in Slovakia are the Student Network (Diákhálózat), Via Nova, and the Esterházy Academy. Noteworthy in the field of self-governance is the Pro Civis, and in the realm of cultural events and heritage preservation, the Sine Metu.
