56ers
The 56ers is the general name for those Hungarian emigrants who left the country as a result of the 1956 revolution. However, it is important to note that in this wave of emigration, the political and economic motivations were blurred, just as in the cases of the migration waves following the suppression of the Prague Spring in 1968 and the declaration of martial law in Poland in 1981. The main direction of Hungarian 56ers was through Austria and Yugoslavia to Western Europe and overseas. Most of them received significantly more favourable treatment in the receiving country than the so-called 45ers and 47ers. Time magazine named the “Hungarian freedom fighter” its Man of the Year for 1956.
