Asylum seeker

An asylum seekeris a foreign citizen or stateless person who has applied for international protection, but has not yet received any form of protection status, i.e. with refugee, subsidiary protection or tolerated stay status. At international level, the most important intergovernmental organization dealing with refugees is the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Naturally, other institutionalized but less formalized forms of international cooperation and mechanisms have also been established by states and the relevant intergovernmental organizations. However, the UNHCR is the main official responsible for the implementation of the 1951 Refugee Convention.
