Hungarian diaspora
The Hungarian diaspora came into being as a consequence of the modern emigration waves caused by wars, drastic political regime changes and economic crises that have devastated the Carpathian Basin over the past centuries. Regarding the assessment of the numerical size of the Hungarian communities dispersed worldwide, a number of difficulties exist. Firstly, in many of the receiving countries ethnic or national affiliation is not recorded in the census data. Secondly, the phenomenon of hiding ethnicity is common in the diaspora communities due to the multiple attachments of their members. Thirdly, there is no accurate data available on the number of Hungarians who left the Carpathian Basin with the emigration waves of the 20th century. Although we do not know exactly how many Hungarians live in diaspora, we know where they are concentrated, and where their cultural centers are located. The largest Hungarian diaspora is located in the United States, mainly in the states of California, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The number of Hungarians is also high in Canada, with about half of them living in Toronto and its environs. The majority of Hungarians in Latin America live in Brazil and Argentina, having their main cultural centers in São Paulo and Buenos Aires. However, smaller diaspora communities are also located in Venezuela, Uruguay, Chile, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Peru, Colombia and Mexico. Furthermore, in the Southern Hemisphere there are significant Hungarian communities in Australia, mostly concentrated in Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide; in New Zealand; and in the Republic of South Africa. In Europe most of the Hungarians living in diaspora reside in the large towns of Germany, Austria, Sweden, France and the United Kingdom. Moreover, the Hungarian diaspora in Israel is also significant. The State Secretariat for Hungarian Communities Abroad created online information portals: first in 2011 the Hungarian Register (itt hivatkozzunk az angol nyelvű változatra: https://www.nemzetiregiszter.hu/main-page) and later the Külhoni Magyarok (ha van angol nyelvű változat, itt hivatkozzunk rá) (Hungarians Abroad), through which it gives detailed and up-to-date information about the organizational life of the Hungarian diaspora and its support by the kin-state.
