Refugee
A refugee is a foreign citizen or stateless person who has received refugee status granted to applicants who—in accordance with the 1951 Geneva Conventions—can substantiate their fear of persecution in his or her country of origin. Refugee status is valid for an indefinite period. In Hungary, refugees can apply for Hungarian citizenship after three years of residence in the country. The largest international organization specializing in the protection of refugees and other persons who need international protection is the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees – UNHCR). Its main activity is to help the governments of the countries concerned to find durable solutions to the issue of refugees. The UNCHR regularly issues Guidelines on International Protection to facilitate the interpretation and practical application of the main international legal instruments on refugee protection.
